Micro-adventure with a SENSE of Adventure: From Ordinary to Extraordinary Travel
Reliving History with My Eyes Closed
"Close your eyes and feel for the holes in the wall, they are a few feet apart and will guide you as they guided hundreds of people before you."
I was standing in a tunnel, 35 feet under the city of Birgu in Malta. The artificial glow of the lights, the hardhat on my head, and the small group of 10 tourists were worlds away from the reality of these air raid tunnels in what became the most heavily bombed country during World War II. Our tour leader wasn't just sharing historical facts; he offered an invitation to transcend time through touch by asking me to close my eyes and connect physically with those who sought shelter here - grasping the same wall holes that had guided terrified civilians through darkness decades ago.
Between 1940 and 1942, Malta was bombed by Italian and German forces almost daily, in over 3,000 air raids in just two years. I was in one section of the 1.5 km of tunnels, hastily carved through solid limestone in 1940. The shelter was designed for 200 people but, in reality, over 500 people routinely fled for cover and crammed into these narrow spaces. Unlike my sanitized experience with electric lighting and a knowledgeable guide, in 1941 there were only scattered oil lamps and candles. The wall holes, chiselled about four feet apart along the walls, became lifelines helping hundreds of frightened people navigate to their designated "spots" in the darkness.
A truer experience of these tunnels would have overwhelmed every sense: the suffocating smell of unwashed bodies pressed together, buckets of excrement and vomit, sounds of crying children echoing off stone walls, constant prayers murmured in Maltese, and the acrid taste of fear - never knowing if your home would still be standing upon return. Residents of Birgu spent up to 16 hours in these shelters during intense bombing periods. Life underground became so frequent that the tunnels housed functioning hospitals and even a birthing room. The later played a recording of a newborn's cry that echoed through the chamber, forcing modern visitors to confront the reality of lives beginning amidst the constant threat of death.
I closed my eyes and reached for the first wall hole, feeling the smooth depression worn into the limestone by thousands of desperate hands. Then I shuffled forward, arm extended until my fingers found the next stone depression. I began counting each one just like resident families once did—"one, two, three..."—creating a mental map as I made my way to where I would have huddled on the hard floor for hours, listening to the muffled sounds of destruction overhead. This simple act of touch connected me to history in a way no museum display ever could.
Sensory Adventure meet Micro-Adventure
Traditional travel guides have long directed us toward what to see—famous landmarks, stunning vistas, and iconic attractions. One glance at a typical Instagram feed confirms our visual bias in travel experiences. Yet these visual-centric approaches often miss the rich experience that unfolds when travellers engage more of the five senses. While our eyes might capture the architectural grandeur of a Sicilian cathedral, they cannot record the resonance of church bells echoing through narrow streets, the aroma of fresh bread wafting from a neighbourhood bakery, or the cool, smooth texture of an ancient marble crypt. By shifting from merely sightseeing to sensory immersion, extraordinary hidden insights of places both foreign and familiar can be revealed.
Micro-adventures are short, local-focused activities that deliver a fun, exciting, and rewarding experience - learn more here! And while the OG term referred to adventures close to home, you can think “local” wherever you are - even while travelling! A sensory micro-adventure takes it one step further. It’s adds a layer of tuning into your surroundings through your senses - an act of mindfulness. You can simply notice which sense is naturally awakened in a place, or intentionally focus on one—like the colours you see, the textures you touch, the sounds you hear, the flavours you taste, or the scents in the air.
Not everyone can summit Kilimanjaro or navigate the Amazon, but nearly everyone can engage in sensory exploration—whether that's savouring the complex flavour notes of locally roasted coffee in a neighbourhood café, identifying birds singing in an urban park, or feeling the textural differences between fabrics in a local market. These micro-adventures deepen our connection to places and cultures in profound ways. Research consistently shows that multi-sensory experiences create stronger neural pathways and more vivid, enduring memories than visual stimuli alone. This explains why a whiff of salty sea air might instantly transport you back to a coastal town visited years ago.
Beyond creating more memorable experiences, sensory micro-adventures foster mindfulness - anchoring us in the present moment through direct engagement with our surroundings. In our increasingly digital world, where screens play a role in many of our experiences, deliberately tuning into the physical sensations of a place offers a powerful counterbalance. Research says the benefits are stress reduction and enhancing our sense of connection and well-being.
Sensory Immersion: The Catania Fish Market
To illustrate the power of sensory micro-adventures, let me share a vivid experience from Sicily that engaged all five senses simultaneously.
The Catania fish market announces itself to your senses long before you lay eyes on it. Three blocks away you hear the buzz of vendors and buyers. The fishmongers shout over each other with details of their daily catches. It is a cacophony made beautiful by the lyrical Sicilian language. Then you smell it - wafts of oily sardines arranged like silver dominoes, the meaty aroma of fresh swordfish steaks, and the sweetness of shellfish piled high.
Along one edge of the market, there is an elevated walkway. My husband and I wriggled our way along the edge - a perfect perch for uninitiated observers. From this vantage point, we could take in the organized chaos of the market. We were spellbound and spent the morning listening to the banter between fishermen, watching them haggling with customers, and “smelling” the work that goes along with market life.
Beneath us, a man swung a blade like an axe. With the confidence of someone who had done this before, he transformed a swordfish—its body nearly as tall as he was—into perfect steaks. Each slice was executed with surgical precision, a cigarette dangling from his lips.
"We need to get closer," I whispered to my husband, drawn by an irresistible pull into the market's core. What had been sensory theatre became sensory immersion. The cobblestones beneath our feet gleamed with a slick mixture of seawater and evidence of the morning's work—fish scales glittering like scattered sequins, the occasional splash of fish guts demanding careful foot placement. My shoes suddenly seemed hopelessly inadequate; rubber boots would be much more practical! At one point a vendor passed us with bouquets of fresh herbs in his arms, diverting our noses to inhale fresh parsley and basil that cut through the smells of the sea. It was the perfect reminder of how these catches would be transformed that evening in the local restaurants and kitchens of Catania into delicious meals.
The Catania Fish Market happens every morning except Sunday and was a highlight of our time in Sicily. It enveloped us with a unique sensory experience that transported us into the authentic daily rhythm of Sicilian coastal life.
